Bucharest
The Capital and Largest City of Romania
Hello travelers! Want a nice city trip not too far? Bucharest, the capital of Romania, might just be your next cool destination. It's the largest city in the country, and it's bursting with energy, history, and things to do. Plus, you can eat really well there!
Best time to visit: From Apr-To-Oct
How to Reach Bucharest
No hassle to arrive. The nearest airport to Bucharest is Bucharest Baneasa Airport (BBU). It is super easy to access, and once there, the taxi, bus or train takes you to the city center in 30-45 minutes. Bucharest is also connected by train and bus to other cities in Europe, useful if you are out and comfortable with those.
Exploring the Bucharest
To enjoy Bucharest, we recommend walking, super-efficient public transport (metro, tram, bus), or even a rental bike. Start with the historic center. That's where the Palace of Parliament is located, a crazy thing, like one of the biggest administrative buildings in Europe. Right next door is the Triumphal Arch. Then, get lost on Calea Victoriei, the main street lined with beautiful buildings and stylish boutiques. Museum fans? The National Art Museum of Romania is great for discovering local culture. And if you want to bring back souvenirs or do a little shopping, head to the Unirea Shopping Center, the largest shopping center in the city.
Food to try in Bucharest
Romanian food is a mix of lots of really good things: Slavic, Ottoman and Hungarian influences. Forget fast food restaurants and go for local dishes. We recommend the Sarmale, cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice, a classic to try. Another option is Ciorb?, a very popular soup that comes in lots of versions, such as Ciorb? de Vr?joaie (with tripe, for the brave) or Ciorb? de Pe?te (with fish). Finish in style with Papana?i, fresh cheese fritters, covered with cream and jam, killer!
