This guide sorts December destinations by what you actually want: warm beaches, city lights, real snow, or something calm and cheap. We’ve also flagged the places that aren’t great in December, because that’s just as useful to know.
Before You Choose: Three Quick Questions
- What weather do you want? Sun, snow, or just not freezing?
- How many days can you take off? A short trip means a short flight.
- What’s your real budget, including flights? The window from about December 20 to January 3 is expensive almost everywhere.
Warm and Beachy December Trips
Thailand (Phuket, Krabi and Bangkok)
December is dry season on Thailand’s Andaman coast, so the sea is calmer and the skies are mostly clear. It’s also peak season, which means higher prices and busy beaches. Bangkok does big New Year countdowns, and Phuket has beach parties for those who want them. Start with our Thailand destination page.Maldives
The dry season starts around December and runs through April. Overwater villas are expensive, but guesthouses on local islands are a much cheaper way in. Details are on our Maldives page.Sri Lanka’s South and West Coast
Galle, Mirissa and Bentota are at their best from roughly December to March. Whale watching off Mirissa usually runs from about November to April. It’s a relaxed, good-value option if you want beaches without a big bill.Goa and Kerala
Both are in peak season. Goa has the New Year party energy, while Kerala’s backwaters are pleasant and much quieter. Prices go up in the last two weeks of December, so book early.Southern Vietnam and Phu Quoc
The south and Phu Quoc are dry in December and good value. The north can be chilly, so if you’re going, read our Vietnam 7-day itinerary and pack a light jacket. One to skip in December: Bali
Bali is a wonderful place, but December falls in its wet season. You’ll still get sunny hours but expect heavy showers and rougher seas. Phuket is the safer pick this month. We explain the difference in our Bali vs Phuket comparison.City Lights and Culture
Dubai
Daytime weather is comfortable, which makes it ideal for sightseeing. The Dubai Shopping Festival usually runs from around mid-December into January. The Burj Khalifa fireworks on New Year’s Eve are famous and extremely crowded, so book a hotel with a view or arrive very early. See our Dubai page.Singapore
Orchard Road is covered in Christmas lights, and Marina Bay hosts a big countdown. December is part of the rainy period, so short showers are common. Pack a small umbrella and you’ll be fine. More on our Singapore page.Egypt and Cambodia
Both are far more comfortable in winter than in summer. Cairo, Luxor and Aswan have pleasant days, and Angkor Wat is drier and cooler. Both are popular in December, so book tours early. See Egypt and Cambodia.Istanbul
It’s cold and sometimes rainy, but you get thinner crowds, lower hotel prices than summer, and hammams and hot tea to warm up. Pack a proper coat. More ideas in our Turkey blog section.Snow and Christmas Magic
Europe’s Christmas Markets
Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Strasbourg and Cologne are the classics. Most markets open in late November and wrap up around Christmas, though some run until the end of the year. Go in early December for smaller crowds. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for most of these trips, so read our Schengen visa documents checklist first, and see our best time to visit Europe page.Norway and Lapland for the Northern Lights
Winter is aurora season, but December also means very short days and serious cold. Pack thermal layers and book a guided tour so you have the best chance of clear skies. Start with our Northern Lights Norway page.Switzerland
It’s as snowy and pretty as the postcards, and it’s expensive. If you can afford it, a few days in Lucerne and around Chapel Bridge make a perfect Christmas trip.Snow in India
Manali, Gulmarg, Auli and Shimla are the usual picks. Snowfall is likely in higher areas but never guaranteed, so check forecasts and road conditions before you go. For something warmer, the Rann of Kutch festival usually runs from about November to February, and Rajasthan is lovely in winter. Our Rajasthan 7-day itinerary shows how to plan it.Where to go by budget
These are rough numbers per person for a 5-to-7-day trip, including flights from India. They shift with dates, so treat them as a starting point.- Under about ₹60,000: Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia
- About ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh: Thailand, Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, Turkey, Egypt
- About ₹1.5 lakh and above: Maldives, Switzerland, European Christmas markets, Norway, Australia
Best places for New Year’s Eve
- Dubai for fireworks and big-city glamour
- Bangkok and Singapore for huge city countdowns
- Sydney for the harbour fireworks, though the flight is long and pricey
- Goa for beach parties
- A desert camp in Rajasthan if you’d rather have a quiet night under the stars
