You are eligible for visa free entry
Australian citizens can enter Mongolia without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. Most itineraries for travel will be that way, whether you are interested in exploring Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi Desert or the Mongolian steppe.
You must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months on arrival in Australia. Passports not meeting this requirement are regularly turned away at the border, so check yours well before booking any flights.
The arrangement is for tourism and leisure, visiting family or friends, and transit through Mongolia. Commercial visits should be checked with the Mongolian Embassy. Short term business meetings may also be in scope.
Chinggis Khan International Airport, Ulaanbaatar is the best entry and exit point for Mongolia. There are also designated land border crossings, but travel to some border areas is restricted for foreign nationals.
You do not need to apply for a visa in advance but you should have the following ready on arrival:
return ticket or onward ticket to show that you intend to leave Mongolia within the 30 days permitted.
Hotel booking, confirmed booking at a ger camp or letter of invitation from a contact in Mongolia with address and contact details. This also helps with the mandatory immigration registration when you arrive.
Usually not checked at the border, but travellers should be able to show they have enough money to cover their stay if asked by immigration officers.
There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for Australian travellers to Mongolia at this time. However, health entry conditions can change so it’s worth checking the latest advice on the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website at smartraveller.gov.au before you go.
Visa-free access is a travel privilege and has clear conditions that travellers should be aware of before they travel:
The visa-free arrangement does not cover paid work, enrolment in a formal academic institution or long-term residence. For longer stays, or to work, study or participate in religious activities an appropriate visa should be obtained before leaving for Mongolia at a Mongolian embassy. Attempting to take up work on a tourist entry is a breach of Mongolian immigration law.
All foreigners must register with the Mongolian Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival either by themselves or through the host – hotel or landlord. Failure to do so can lead to fines which have to be paid before leaving the country. If staying with friends or in a private accommodation, don’t assume this will be done automatically. Check and follow up.
Overstaying and Restricted Areas Visitors who do not register and who stay more than 30 days, even for reasons beyond their control, will be stopped at departure, temporarily denied exit and fined. If you wish to stay longer in Mongolia, you should contact the Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar before your permitted stay expires. There are also travel restrictions on foreign nationals to some border areas - you will need to obtain permission from local authorities in advance if you are planning to travel to these places.
You may make multiple entries but each entry will be counted as a separate visit and will count towards the 30 day limit. The overall travel pattern should not indicate an attempt to reside in Mongolia on a rolling visa free basis.
