Visa Requirements

Length of Stay Australian passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism, business trips, visiting family, or transit. Each entry is counted as a new visit, although immigration usually checks travelers who try to stay for more than 180 days in a calendar year by multiple entries.

Visit Japan Web (VJW)

Visit Japan Web is divided into three parts: immigration information (disembarkation card), customs information (customs declaration), and a tax-exemption section. When you successfully complete these sections, you will receive QR codes to show at the airport on arrival. Registration is free and can be done at services.digital.go.jp/en/visit-japan-web.

Visa-free entry is available at all major international airports and ports of entry, including the airports of Narita and Haneda in Tokyo, Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Chubu Centrair in Nagoya, and other designated ports of entry throughout Japan.

Tourism, business meetings and conferences, visiting family, and transit. You may not work for pay or profit while you are in this status. Enrollment in formal academic programs is also not permitted.

Passport Requirements

An Australian passport must be valid for the duration of the stay. Japan doesn’t have a set minimum, but it is generally advisable that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your date of leaving Japan.

You should take: Visit Japan Web QR Codes Your QR codes for immigration and customs after registering with VJW. If you have not pre-registered your information prior to arrival, you will have to do so at the airport so pre-registration is highly recommended to save time.

Immigration officers and your airline will likely want to see a confirmed onward or return flight ticket to prove you will be leaving Japan before your 90 days are up.

Proof of Accommodation

Hotel reservations for your stay or a written invitation with contact details if you are staying with friends or family in Japan.

Financial Means

There is no formal minimum but officers may ask you to prove that you have enough money to support yourself for the duration of your stay. Usually, a bank statement or a credit card with available funds will suffice.

Biometrics On Arrival

Most foreign visitors will be fingerprinted and photographed on arrival. Exceptions are diplomats, children under 16 and some other categories.

Important Limitations

Work & Study

Temporary Visitor is for tourism, visiting friends or family, or attending unpaid conferences. Under this status you are not allowed to undertake any paid work, gainful activity or local employment. Those who wish to work need to have a work visa and those who are enrolled in formal study need to have a student visa, both of which must be arranged through the Embassy of Japan in Canberra prior to departure. Australians aged 18-30 can apply for a Working Holiday visa, which allows you to work in Japan for up to 12 months.

Overstaying

Overstaying is a serious offence and could result in fines, detention, deportation or future entry bans. Make sure you leave Japan before your 90 day stay is over. Japan rarely issues extensions on short-stay visas and the workaround of leaving the country and returning (a “visa run”) is increasingly being flagged by immigration - back-to-back short stays run the risk of being denied entry.

Multiple Entries

No official limit on number of visits per year but immigration officers have wide discretion. Short visits with little time in between can often lead to questions about whether your true intentions are in line with tourism.

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Japan has rigid border controls. Please do not bring in any prohibited goods such as meat products (including jerky), narcotics or unauthorised firearms and ammunition. Declaration Necessary: Carrying cash or gold in excess of ¥1,000,000 (or equivalent) Japan is also very strict about certain medications - some common prescription drugs available in Australia are banned or restricted in Japan so check with the Japanese Embassy before travel.
