Australia to Armenia

Policy of Armenia (unilateral): Armenian citizens can stay in Armenia for a long time without a visa. Armenia has unilaterally granted visa-free access to holders of ordinary Australian passports as part of a longer list of countries it recognizes for unrestricted short-to-medium-term visits, so there is no need for any bilateral agreement. The exemption applies to tourism, business, and personal travel. Those who wish to work or study must still obtain the relevant authorization prior to depart
Key Details for Visa-Free Entry

Length of Stay

The exemption allows for a maximum cumulative stay of up to 180 days in any one-year period. This is not a per-trip allowance - every day spent inside Armenia counts toward the 180 days total, regardless of how many separate entries are made within that year.

Passport Requirements

You need a valid Australian ordinary passport. Armenia does not require a minimum period of validity other than the intended length of stay, but it is strongly recommended to have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of departure, as is customary in the region.

Permitted Purposes

Tourism, visiting friends or relatives, business meetings, cultural exchanges, and transit. It is not valid for work or formal study, which requires prior authorization from the relevant Armenian authorities.

Entry Points

The visa waiver is valid at all official border-control points open to foreign nationals, including Zvartnots International Airport, Yerevan, land crossings, and other designated ports of entry.

Required Documentation for Entry

No advance visa application is required – but border officials may ask for the following on arrival:

Proof of onward travel

a confirmed return or onward ticket indicating your intention to leave Armenia within the period of stay authorized.

Accommodation Proof

hotel bookings for your stay or rental agreement and host contact details if staying privately. If you are staying in a hotel, please note the hotel is legally obliged to register your stay. If you are staying in private accommodation you will have to register yourself with the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Financial Sufficiency

this is not necessarily required at the border, but officers may ask for proof that you have enough money to support your stay, for example a bank statement or the equivalent.

Important Limitations

Work and Study

visa-free entry does not permit employment or enrolment in formal study. Australians intending to work or study in Armenia must obtain the appropriate permit or authorisation through the Armenian Embassy before travel. Armenia currently has no dedicated digital nomad visa, though remote workers operating in a legal grey area should be aware that immigration reforms expected in late 2026 are likely to tighten work authorisation requirements.

Overstaying

exceeding the 180-day annual allowance without holding a valid visa or residence permit constitutes an overstay under Armenian law. Penalties include an administrative fine of between AMD 50,000 and AMD 100,000 (approximately AUD 185 to AUD 370). Significant overstays can result in deportation proceedings and re-entry bans. If you need to extend your stay for legitimate reasons, apply for a visa extension at the Migration and Citizenship Service before your permitted period expires. Extensions of up to 60 days are available, with fees ranging from AMD 10,000 to AMD 50,000 depending on the length and circumstances.

Multiple Entries

there is no restriction on the number of entries within the year, provided the cumulative total does not exceed 180 days. Once the 180-day limit is reached, you must depart and allow sufficient time outside Armenia to rebuild your annual allowance before returning.

Armenian Dual Nationals

Armenian law requires individuals who hold Armenian citizenship - including dual nationals - to enter and depart on an Armenian passport. Australians of Armenian descent who may hold Armenian citizenship, even if they have never formalised it, are advised to check their status with the Armenian Embassy in advance to avoid complications at the border.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Australian passport holders have full visa-free access and can arrive without any prior application or authorization.

Up to 180 days within any 12-month period. That's one of the more generous allowances you'll find anywhere.

Tourism, family visits, business meetings, transit, and short-term stays are all covered. Working or long-term study requires separate permits.

Nothing that affects Australians directly at this stage. The visa-free arrangement is well established and there's no equivalent of Europe's ETIAS system on the horizon for Armenia. Just keep an eye on Smartraveller for any broader travel advisories before you go.
